Paramount and DreamWorks greenlit a third cinematic outing for the Autobots and Decepticons in March, giving the film a July 1, 2011 release date.
A proposed sequel is now in development, but the director of the first two instalments has "had enough of the Transformers world", Total Film reports.
He said: "It's easy to go shoot an art movie in a winery in the South of France. But people have no idea how hard it is to create something like Transformers.
"After the three-and-a-half years I've spent making these movies, I feel like I've had enough of the Transformers world."
He added: "I need to do something totally divergent, something without any explosions."
Bay will next serve as producer on the Nightmare On Elm Street remake.
Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, opens in cinemas on June 24.
