Gay group has 'mixed emotions' on 'Brüno'

Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest movie Brüno has evoked "mixed emotions" in a gay watchdog group.

Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), an organisation that monitors how the LGBT community is depicted in the media, has expressed concerns over the comedy about a gay Austrian fashion reporter, according to E!.

After viewing a rough cut of the film, the group requested Universal Pictures to have Cohen shoot a public announcement in support of gay rights and tolerance to be shown as part of the closing credits.

"We have very mixed emotions about the movie," said Rashad Robinson, GLAAD's director of media programmes. "Those of us who saw the film agreed that you can't critique it as a single film because it's more like 90 minutes of individual sketches.

"Some are funny and hit their mark but others hit the [gay] community instead."

The studio released a statement, saying: "Brüno uses provocative comedy to powerfully shed light on the absurdity of many kinds of intolerance and ignorance, including homophobia.”

Brüno will open in UK and US cinemas on July 10.
