The original comedy featured Bill Murray in his film debut, playing a camp counselor in charge of a group of misfits. Paramount’s Greg Mooradian will oversee the new version, which does not yet have a writer or director attached.
The studio has partnered with Montecito Pictures, which is co-run by original director Ivan Reitman, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Several years ago, Lionsgate was said to be working on a new version of the film, but it failed to materialise.
Meatballs made $43 million during its original run and spawned three sequels, none of which featured Murray.
It was recently announced that the Caddyshack star will reprise his role as Dr. Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters 3.
