According to The Mirror, the Boat That Rocked star has been lined up to play King Richard alongside Russell Crowe in the £110 million project.
"Ridley thought Rhys was a recognisable face fans would love to see and would be perfect for the part," said a production insider.
"He made the call himself because he knew Rhys would be more likely to say yes to him in person. Luckily, Rhys had space in his schedule and jumped at the chance."
Robin Hood, which co-stars Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, is currently filming in Ifans's native Pembrokeshire, Wales.
