The Brit comedy, set aboard a boat housing a pirate radio station, has also shifted from distributor Universal to the studio's art house division Focus Features, with the arrival date pushed back from August 28 to November.
Budgeted at more than $50 million, Working Title's The Boat That Rocked opened to mixed reviews - with many critics complaining about its 135-minute running time - and poor ticket sales.
Focus president James Schamus told Variety: "It will be a shorter, leaner version. We think it is a real crowd-pleaser. We love a challenge, and we love working with Working Title."
