Christopher Reeve dies

Christopher Reeve

Actor Christopher Reeve, known both for his role in the Superman series of movies and for his work as a strong advocate for spinal cord research, has died at the age of 52.

His publicist Wesley Combs said that the actor died of heart failure on Sunday, a day after he suffered a cardiac arrest and lapsed into a coma at his home in New York.

In 1995, Reeve broke his neck and was paralysed in a horse-riding accident. Over the course of the past nine years, he had regained some sensation and movement and had even returned to acting. His post-accident acting credits included appearances in the Superman-themed WB show Smallville.

Reeve had also devoted much of his time to the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, an organisation devoted to funding research to develop treatments for paralysis caused by injuries to the central nervous system. After news of Reeve's death broke, the CRPF's website went down for a short time, presenting a "too many users connected" error.
