'Star Trek' star infuriates fans

800 locals of the town of Riverside, Iowa, were told by William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk in the original incarnation of Star Trek, that they were being filmed as extras for his upcoming film, Invasion Iowa.
However, after filming had ceased, the stunned townspeople were informed that they had in fact been captured on film for a spoof documentary.
"Everything in front of and behind the cameras was faked. The only thing that was real is the love we have for Riverside," explained Shatner. The motive behind the filming was to examine the effect of Hollywood on a small community, this one in particular because of its annual Star Trek conventions.
The disillusioned and irate citizens of Riverside have received an apology from the film-makers and the producers have paid £56,000 into the town's funds.
