Superman Returns star Brandon Routh is no longer under contract with Warner Bros to portray the Man of Steel, it has been reported.

Speaking to Spanish entertainment site Omlette, the actor confirmed that his contract with the film studio has expired, but expressed interest in starring in a follow-up to the 2006 movie should the opportunity arise.

"The term of the contract expired," he said. "But if they call me again, [I'd go] back to the character without thinking twice!"

Warners is rumoured to be planning a reboot of the superhero series, with the next film taking a darker tone, but Routh insisted that he has not received any news on its progress.

"I do not know of anything," he confirmed. "I'm sure that Warner Bros is moving there, but everything is still uncertain. Really, I do not know anything."

Routh currently has starring roles lined up in two upcoming comic book adaptations, Dead Of Night and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
