Michael Winterbottom's film 9 Songs is to be released as the director intended with sexually explicit scenes featuring real sex between the actors involved (Kieran O'Brien and Margo Stilley). The film caused a stir at the Cannes film festival earlier this year.
The film was passed with an 18 certificate by the BBFC as its controversial content was "exceptionally justified by context". They qualified this by saying:
"Some people may find such explicit images shocking or unexpected in a cinema film.
"The board is sensitive to public concerns, and its guidelines are based on extensive consultation."
9 Songs will have preview screenings next Valentine's Day.
