The sketch stars Will Forte as the son of secret agent Angus MacGyver. He and his assistant (played by Kristen Wiig) regularly find themselves trapped in a room with a bomb about to go off, only to see MacGruber get sidetracked by his personal problems. MacGyver star Richard Dean Anderson has appeared in several of the skits.
Forte and Wiig will reprise their roles for the comedy movie, which centres on the eponymous character's attempts to stop the evil Cunth from launching a nuclear warhead. Val Kilmer is expected to take on the villain role with Ryan Phillippe in talks to play a colleague of MacGruber.
Creator Jorma Taccone will direct MacGruber from a script he penned with Forte and John Solomon. Saturday Night Live impresario Lorne Michaels is producing the film for Relativity Media.
Previous SNL sketches to make it to the big screen include Wayne's World, Coneheads and A Night At The Roxbury.
