Gary Ross has been hired to rewrite the script for Spider-Man 4, reports Variety.

The writer/director has previously worked with Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire on Pleasantville and Seabiscuit.

The next instalment in the superhero saga will see Maguire and director Sam Raimi return to the franchise following the $890 million worldwide box office success of Spider-Man 3.

Ross is also working on a biopic of cyclist Lance Armstrong and is attached to direct Maguire's Tokyo Suckerpunch.

Zodiac writer James Vanderbilt and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire previously worked on the Spider-Man 4 script.
