
Sacha Baron Cohen's Brüno has debuted at the top of the US box office, taking in $30.4 million over the weekend.
The controversial comedy was shown in 2,756 theatres nationwide and outdid its predecessor Borat, which grossed $26.5 million in its opening weekend in 2006.
Ice Age 3 has dropped one slot to number two with $28.5 million, followed by Transformers 2 at number three with $24.2 million added to its blockbuster gross.
Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp has ended up in the number four slot with an intake of $14.1 million.
The weekend's second debut comes from Heroes star Hayden Panettiere with the teen comedy I Love You Beth Cooper at number seven, pulling in a mere $5 million over the three-day period.
