The actor, who played the comic book character Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, will reportedly play Green Lantern Hal Jordan.
Rumours about who would be given the starring role have been surfacing for months, with Justin Timberlake and The Hangover star Bradley Cooper suggested as possible stars.
Green Lantern will be directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) and written by Greg Berlanti (TV's Brothers & Sisters) and Marc Guggenheim (Amazing Spider-Man, Brothers & Sisters).
Production is expected to begin in January 2010.
Reynolds is also expected to reprise the role of Deadpool in a forthcoming film.
