Paramount has announced plans to make a movie based on the Mattel action figure Max Steel.

The toy firm, which is also behind this summer's action films Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen and GI Joe: Rise Of Cobra, will team up with Paramount and producer Joe Roth to develop a movie project based on the character's exploits.

It will centre on a 19-year-old extreme sports fanatic who is hired to work for a secret agency following an accident that gives him superhuman strength.

The Max Steel franchise started in 1999 in the US and spawned an animated series that ran from 2000 to 2002. However, the character has proved most popular in Latin American territories.

Mattel's Barry Waldo told Variety: "A theatrical film plays a significant role to relaunch the franchise. But we have a strong Latin consumer we're going to keep happy while broadening the franchise for the rest of the world.

"We wouldn't do ourselves a favour if we turned a blind eye to it. That's the artistic challenge we've got."
