Rex Features
The Star Wars actress has signed on for the role of nurse Jane Foster in the Marvel Comic-based feature, which will be directed by Kenneth Branagh.
Marvel Studios has revealed that the character will be "updated" for the new movie, which will see Thor being cast down to earth to live among the humans.
Marvel also confirmed speculation that Star Trek's Chris Hemsworth will take on the title role, opposite previously-announced British actor Tom Hiddleston, who will play the villain Loki.
Filming on Thor is scheduled to begin early next year with a scheduled May 20, 2011 release date.
