Roth: 'I am no longer directing Cell'

Rex Features

Eli Roth has revealed that he is no longer involved with the big screen adaptation of the Stephen King novel Cell.

The Hostel director has been attached to the project, about a mysterious cell phone signal that changes human beings into zombies, since it was announced as a movie in 2006.

Roth told Shocktillyoudrop.com that he is now not affiliated with the Dimension Films production.

He said: "I kind of quietly walked away from that one... There was just sort of a difference in opinion on how to make the film and what the story should be, and there's a different direction the studio wants to go with it."

The filmmaker admitted that there were no ill-feelings between himself and the Weinstein brothers, who run the film studio and are producers on Inglourious Basterds, in which Roth has a role.

He added: "It was very friendly because it's the Weinsteins, they made Inglourious Basterds and we're all friends.

"I said, 'I'm not really interested in doing the film this way. You guys go ahead and I'm going to make my own films'."

Roth can next be seen in the World War II film, starring Brad Pitt and directed by Quentin Tarantino, which opens in cinemas on August 21.
