Jesse Eisenberg has revealed that his Adventureland director Greg Mottola kept apologising for the quality of his script.

Mottola's semi-autobiographical comedy centres on a college graduate forced to work at a theme park over the summer. Speaking to DS, Eisenberg admitted that he recognised a lot of Adventureland's quirky lead character in Mottola.

"When I read the script I felt that this guy can't be for real because the character is so sincere and sweet and genuine," he said. "When I met him I realised what it was about him, he's a very self-deprecating, genuine guy."

Eisenberg also explained that Mottola was extremely critical of his own screenplay, saying: "If you had a question about the script, instead of answering your question he'd say, 'Sorry, I shouldn't have written that, it's a terrible line. I'll change the line, I'm a terrible writer, I don't know why I'm doing this!'"

Adventureland is released in UK cinemas today.
