Bosworth will reunite with her Superman Returns co-star James Marsden for director Rod Lurie's new take on the controversial Sam Peckinpah thriller.
The story centres on a Hollywood screenwriter (Marsden) and his wife (Bosworth) who move back to her hometown in Mississippi. Skarsgård will portray Bosworth's ex-boyfriend, who sees her return as a chance to relive his glory days.
The 1971 original, which starred Dustin Hoffman and Susan George, caused a stir on release due to its brutal violence and rape scenes.
