Xavier Samuel is reported to have signed on to play Riley, a college student who becomes part of vampire Victoria's (Rachel Lefevre) revenge plan against Bella (Kristen Stewart).
The 25-year-old has appeared in a series of films in his home country, including Newcastle and Road Train. This will mark his first US acting role.
Earlier this week, Harry Potter star Tom Felton laughed off speculation that he would be starring as Riley in the highly-anticipated movie but admitted that he would be open to the opportunity if it came along.
Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg had previously revealed that she wanted G.I. Joe star Channing Tatum to take on the character.
Eclipse is scheduled to begin filming in August for a June 2010 release.
