Australian Xavier Samuel will star in the forthcoming Eclipse as Riley, a college student who becomes pivotal in the villainous Victoria's (Rachel Lefevre) plot to get revenge on Bella (Kristen Stewart).
Speaking to Adelaide Now, the actor said: "I was up against some truly great actors who I'm privileged to be considered among. It's a fantastic opportunity."
The 25-year-old, who graduated from Flinders University Drama Centre in 2005, went on to say that he had only compiled his audition tape in Sydney three weeks ago, before he was called to Los Angeles last Thursday.
Other big names that had been linked to the role included Harry Potter star Tom Felton and Channing Tatum, who was screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg's top choice.
Filming on Eclipse is scheduled to begin next month, ahead of a June 2010 release.
