The actor, who portrays Ripcord in the big screen adaptation of the Hasbro toy, told reporters at the movie's UK press conference that he had to resort to playing with his friends' action figures because his family were too poor to buy him his own.
"We grew up in a house with ten kids, my father made $10,000 (£6,127) a year," Wayans said. "We grew up really, really poor so it was either dinner or a GI Joe doll. I didn't get a chance to play with them, but I'd steal my friends.
"If we had a toy in my house, I'd have put hot sauce on it and ate it!"
GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, which centres on an elite military unit attempting to recover stolen warheads, opens worldwide on August 7.
