Spirit picks up 'King Kong' prequel

Rex Features

Spirit has acquired the rights to Joe DeVito and Brad Strickland's book Kong: King Of Skull Island, reports Variety.

The prequel to the famous giant gorilla tale follows the animal's history on Skull Island and reveals how he became king there. Other gorillas and dinosaurs are involved in the story.

King Of Skull Island was published before Peter Jackson's big screen remake of King Kong in 2005.

The new film will be developed with motion-capture technology, using similar techniques to Robert Zemeckis's The Polar Express and Beowulf.

Spirit are developing spinoff graphic novels, videogames and toys for the project.
