Desperate Housewives star Josh Henderson has admitted that he once asked ex-girlfriend Ashley Greene for a role in the Twilight franchise.

The actor, who played Austin McCann in the ABC drama, told E! Online's Marc Malkin that he had wanted Greene (Alice Cullen) to help him land the part of Riley in Eclipse.

"I talked to Ashley about potentially being the new, college, all-American character that's a vampire in the third one. I went for a few auditions, but they went with an Australian kid," he explained.

The part was eventually awarded to relative newcomer Xavier Samuel, who will begin filming with the rest of the cast in Vancouver next month.

Discussing his former girlfriend's new-found success, Henderson added: "I remember when she was brand new. She used to come on set with me and be like, 'Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh'. So I'm completely stoked for her that she's doing her own thing... It's completely changed her life."

New Moon, the second instalment in the Twilight saga, will arrive in cinemas in November.
