Rex Features

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment are developing a film based on Dr Seuss book The Lorax, reports Variety.

The 3D CG animated feature will be co-directed by Chris Renaud, Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio.

Published in 1971, The Lorax has an environmental theme. The book is narrated by a greedy businessman who dismisses the warnings of the Lorax - a tree-loving creature - and destroys a forest to manufacture clothes. It leaves behind a polluted wasteland and all the animals leave.

The movie will be Illumination Entertainment's second Dr Seuss project, following Jim Carrey's 2008 comedy Horton Hears A Who!.

The Lorax is scheduled for release on March 2, 2012.
