The 62-year-old, who helmed the first two instalments of the franchise in 1984 and 1990 respectively, admitted that a third outing is in its planning stages, says Empire.
He said: "I hear they're going to make another one soon. I can see why - it would be stupid to let that title go to waste. The actors from the first two are too old to do a proper sequel, so I'm sure when the new one arrives it will be a remake of the original."
Filmmaker Chris Columbus, who wrote the original picture, denied that he wouldn't be involved with the proposed project. However, he said that an upgrade featuring special effects is not a good idea, adding: "If they do the monsters with CGI, I don't know if it would be the same. They should go back and do it with puppets again."
It was reported earlier that Elisabeth Shue is to star in Piranha 3D, an update of Dante's 1978 horror film.
