Jerry Bruckheimer revealed earlier that filming on the fourth instalment is to begin shooting next year, with Johnny Depp lined up to reprise his Captain Jack Sparrow role.
The Chicago filmmaker will join the project to ensure that it will go before cameras in 2010 as planned, Variety reports.
The director of the first three films, Gore Verbinski, turned down helming the sequel in order to adapt video game BioShock into a feature.
Orlando Bloom, who played Will Turner in the previous Pirates movies, has allegedly declined to appear in the proposed follow-up.
Marshall's upcoming adaptation of Broadway musical Nine, which stars Nicole Kidman and Dame Judi Dench, opens in cinemas in November.
