CBS Films has hired Gregory Poirier (National Treasure: Book of Secrets) to write a movie based on the TV show Gunsmoke, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The original Western series, the longest-running primetime US show until being eclipsed recently by The Simpsons, centred on Marshal Matt Dillon as he fought to keep order in the old west.

Initially conceived as a radio show in 1952 by Norman MacDonnell and John Meston, Gunsmoke leapt to CBS in 1955 and remained on air for 20 years. James Arness, Milburn Stone and Amanda Blake led the cast of the TV version.

Craig Baumgarten will serve as producer on Gunsmoke.
