Director John Hughes, who passed away yesterday at the age of 59, had a knack for tapping into teen angst and giving misfits a moment in the sun. In a prolific three-year creative burst, he wrote and directed iconic '80s movies Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Planes, Train & Automobiles. He retired from directing in 1991 after making Curly Sue, but continued to pen movies for others, with his screenwriting work including Home Alone, Beethoven and Miracle On 34th Street.
