Tracey Emin scraps film over rating

Tracey Emin, best known for art ventures such as Bed and Everyone I Have Ever Slept With, has pulled her film Top Spot from cinema release due to her disapproval of it being given an 18 certificate by the BBFC.

Emin is displeased with the rating awarded to her film, which is targeted at a teenage audience and is based upon her own experiences of growing up in Margate. The film is a collaboration with Michael Winterbotton (Jude; 24 Hour Party People).

On hearing the decision to give her film an 18 certificate Emin said: "I made this very personal film about teenage girls. I never in a million years thought they would not be able to see it."

The BBFC gave the film an 18 rating on the strength of a scene portraying the suicide of one of the lead characters. However, Emin finds it silly that the film will be shown on BBC3: "The most ludicrous thing about the BBFC's decision is that the film is going to be shown over the Christmas season by the BBC and anyone will be able to watch it."
