The Incredibles took $51m (£27.4) this weekend in the US, bringing its total to $144m (£77.5m). The film shows signs of repeating the success of Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo, which eventually took $340m (£183m).
Chuck Viane, Disney's head distributor said: "I've always learned not to make long-range forecasts, but this is obviously going to go on to be a huge success."
"If it happens to mirror Nemo that would be the best of all worlds for us."
In second place came festive film The Polar Express, featuring the voice of Tom Hanks and taking $23.5m (£12.6m).
Third was Pierce Brosnan's After The Sunset, followed by The Edge of Reason and Seed of Chucky in fifth place, which revolves around a nasty doll.
