Kruger: 'I'm offered a war film every week'

Diane Kruger has said that she is offered a part in a World War II movie every week because she is German.

The actress, who can be seen in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds from Wednesday, told reporters at the film's UK press conference that she is often wary about appearing in projects that explore Germany's part in the conflict.

"Being German, as you probably can imagine, I get offered a World War II piece once a week," she remarked. "I never wanted to do that, because I didn't want to be associated with that part of my country's history."

Kruger explained that she was determined to win the role of German actress and spy Bridget von Hammersmark after reading Tarantino's screenplay.

"This came along and it was one of the very few times you read a script and go, 'Oh my God, he actually wrote this for me!'" she said. "That wasn't true at all, [Quentin] probably didn't know who I was at that point, but I really felt like I was born to play this part. I knew deep in my heart that if I got the opportunity to meet with him, which took a long time and a lot of convincing, that he could hire me."
