The original film, which starred Jane Fonda, was set in the far future and told the story of a highly sexual female mercenary given the task of finding the evil Durand-Durand.
A movie insider told The Sun: "The script is under way and John Carpenter is set to direct, so it's all about finding the new Barbarella. Whoever gets it is going to have to look super-hot in not very much clothing."
Also rumoured to be interested in the role are Sienna Miller and Katherine Heigl.
The new version of Barbarella was originally set up at Universal in May 2007, directed by Robert Rodriguez and starring his girlfriend Rose McGowan, but fell through due to budget issues.
