Speaking at the UK press conference for the film, the director however admitted that viewers and critics were free to interpret the movie as such.
Tarantino explained: "The first thing I wrote was, 'Chapter One: Once upon a time in occupied France'. Some people have said, 'So, does that mean it's a fairytale?'
"Well if you want to look at it that way, feel free to look at it that way, and I think the movie works very well in that regard."
He added: "I personally do not look at it that way. The way I look at it is like this: My characters change the course of history.
"Now that didn't happen because my characters didn't exist. But if they had have existed, then everything that happens is quite plausible."
Eli Roth has described his part in Inglourious Basterds as a form of wish-fulfilment for a Jewish actor.
