Movie Awards preview: Best Comedy
Published Saturday, Aug 15 2009, 10:00 BST | By Simon Reynolds
With the world slipping into economic armageddon and swine flu paranoia taking hold, at least there's still been a chance to laugh at the cinema with the past 12 months being a strong year for comedies. Zac Efron made a successful transition out of the HSM franchise with 17 Again, while Brüno and The Hangover turned up the raunch factor. Read on for our look at the movies nominated for Best Comedy at the Digital Spy Movie Awards.

17 Again
"Expect moral messages and soppy monologues aplenty, but a witty script and some hilarious set pieces mean the tried-and-trusted theme of not taking life for granted comes across as suitably refreshed and modern." [LM]
> Red carpet: Zac Efron
Brüno
"Brüno is never in danger of being derailed due to its frequent hilarity and stunning shock value. Mega camp Brüno's encounters with 'kissable' gay converters, dildo-armed karate instructors, anal bleachers and Harrison Ford are just a fraction of the fast-paced movie's ascent into the realms of genius." [BRJ]

Ghost Town
"As romantic comedies go, it isn't bad. In fact it's quite entertaining, but that is largely because of Gervais's improvised meanderings as grouchy dentist Dr. Bertram Pincus. As with so many predictable award ceremonies, his quaint little Brit shtick offers much-needed refreshment." [SP]

The Hangover
"A Phil Collins-loving Mike Tyson (still packing a fierce right hook), taser-happy school children and a photomontage of the 'lost night' that rolls over the end credits makes The Hangover a gut-bustingly funny boy's own comedy." [SR]
> Interview: Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis
In The Loop
"It's an acerbically funny exploration on how words can be twisted, turned and engineered by sly operators desperate to cling on to power and status… a glorious farce of spin, soundbite gaffes and crossed wires, Iannucci has harnessed all the BBC sitcom's genius for this brilliant, tack-sharp comedy." [SR]
> Interview: Armando Iannucci
Marley & Me
"This real-life tale of traditional American life with man's best friend is surprisingly moving and generous with the laughs. The bumbling John Grogan, could easily have been a turn-off, but Wilson's wise-cracking charms are switched on full notch. Likewise, Aniston still has that underlying Rachel Green likeability." [AF]
> Review
Tropic Thunder
"Tropic Thunder is a rare beast. A high concept blockbuster comedy packed full of megastars that works perfectly - and packs a hilarious satirical edge too. It also accomplishes a seemingly impossible feat - making alien lizard believer and serial couch jumper Tom Cruise cool." [BRJ]
> Interview: Stiller, Downey Jr, Black
Yes Man
"The actor's manic energy of old hasn't dimmed. Agreeing to sexual relief from his OAP neighbour, a penis enlargement email, a Persian mail order bride and a Red Bull-fuelled rave provide him with enough rope to keep chuckles flowing." [SR]
> Interview: Jim Carrey
Review excerpts by Simon Reynolds, Stella Papamichael, Ben Rawson-Jones, Alex Fletcher and Lara Martin.
