Legendary Pictures is to develop a movie based on the life of Jimi Hendrix, according to Variety.

Thomas Tull, Legendary's chairman and CEO, will produce the film with Bill Gerber. Max Borenstein has been hired to write the screenplay.

Previous attempts to make a movie about Hendrix have hit problems due to rights issues with Experience Hendrix, the firm in charge of the rock icon's legacy which is run by Hendrix's stepsister Janie.

Legendary, said to be in "loose talks" to secure permission, is attempting to navigate around the rights issues by writing the script first, then getting official approval from Hendrix's estate.

Lenny Kravitz and Andre Benjamin from Outkast have previously expressed an interest playing Hendrix on screen.
