After scathing reviews, Oliver Stone's eagerly-awaited biopic Alexander only made it to sixth place in the US box office this weekend.
The film, based upon the prodigious Macedonian leader Alexander the Great, only took $13.5m (£7m)in its first weekend. The film opened on Wednesday due to Thanksgiving, so its total takings now amount to $21.6m (£11.4m).
The film was condemned by critics from its first viewing. It has been accused of featuring bad acting, bad hair (as worn by Colin Farrell), and lack of any real substance. It has also annoyed the Greeks, who may take legal action, due to the film's portral of their historical leader being bisexual.
One of Alexander's few advocates is author Gore Vidal, who praises the movie's depiction of the issue of bisexuality as "barrier-breaking."
National Treasure, starring Nicholas Cage as a treasure hunter, enjoyed its second week at the top, taking $33.1m (£17.m), followed by The Incredibles at number three with $24.1m (£12.7m).
