Mays: 'Filming Tintin was liberating'

WENN

Daniel Mays has compared acting in Steven Spielberg's upcoming Tintin movie to working in theatre because of the use of motion capture 3-D technology.

The star plays a sidekick to Daniel Craig's Red Rackham in The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, which is currently in post-production and due for release in 2011.

Mays told DS: "It was quite liberating, because in a way it was quite like doing a piece of theatre. You don't have to worry about if a camera's getting you in close-up because you're being tracked the whole time.

"It's all fed into a motion capture camera, which is like an oversize Gameboy. It's like a PSP where you move the joystick around and all of the world is in that scene, so you've got huge sets."

Comparing the production to the filming of independent British movie Shifty, which is released on DVD today, Mays added: "It was a completely different kind of ball game.

"It was quite a nerve-wracking experience the whole thing, but it was an amazing experience. I was sort of pinching myself a bit.

"Ultimately though, whether its a big budget film or something like this, when someone shouts action you've just got to do your job and play the part, regardless of what the budget is."
