It had previously been reported that Tatum was Melissa Rosenberg's first choice for the role of student Riley, which eventually went to Australian newcomer Xavier Samuel.
Speaking to E! Online's Marc Malkin, she said: "I totally tried to get him to do it. I was like, 'Baby, do Twilight'.
"Oh, my God, I'm a huge Twilight fan. I've read all the books. So I was like, 'You should do it, you should do it, you should do it!'"
She added: "I just saw the trailer for [New Moon] today. It's one of those things where I liked the books so much, I felt like a ten-year-old reading them. I finished them in like three days."
Production on Eclipse began in Vancouver last week. New Moon, the second instalment in the franchise, arrives in cinemas in November.
