John Hurt went to Buckingham Palace today to receive a CBE from the Queen for his services to drama.
He told the BBC that: "The Queen insinuated that it was an interesting profession and that I'd been at it for some time. She said how fascinating it was."
Regarding his being honoured he revealed: "I've never done it before. It's a one-off. I'm very grateful and delighted."
Hurt, 64, met fame in his role as Quentin Crisp in TV series The Naked Civil Servant, on which he said: "That did it for me. It was a fantastic script."
Official recognitions of his work in the past include a Bafta for 1979's Alien, in which a creature famously burst through his chest, and Oscar nominations for his appearances in The Elephant Man and Midnight Express.
