Based on the Platinum Studios graphic novel by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, it centres around a battle between Apaches and Western settlers which is interrupted by a spaceship landing in Arizona.
Downey Jr began talks for the DreamWorks project last year when Iron Man scripters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby were working on the project. The duo were later replaced by Star Trek screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and Lost producer Damon Lindelof.
Favreau has boarded the movie, which is being eyed for a summer 2011 release, and is expected to make it his next directing job after finishing work on the upcoming Iron Man 2.
