The Resident Evil and Alien Vs. Predator helmer will steer a new version of Alexandre Dumas's classic novel, which centres on protagonist d'Artagnan befriending musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis.
Acclaimed screenwriter Andrew Davies (Brideshead Revisited, Bridget Jones's Diary) penned the script with Anderson, who will produce alongside his Impact Pictures partner Jeremy Bolt and Constanin Films's Robert Kulzer.
"We are definitely modernising The Three Musketeers without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece," Anderson told The Hollywood Reporter. "But in our film, corsets and feathered hats don't take centre stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure."
Shooting will take place in France and Germany next year for a 2011 release.
