The BBC Films and Ruby Films project is an adaptation of Posy Simmonds's graphic novel, which takes inspiration from Thomas Hardy novel Far From the Madding Crowd. It centres on a flirtatious woman (Arterton) who stirs up trouble when she returns to her village.
Dominic Cooper, Roger Allam, Luke Evans, Bill Camp and Tamsin Greig have also been cast in the film, scheduled to begin production later this month at Pinewood Studios.
"I've loved Posy Simmonds's work for a long time," Frears said to Variety.
Arterton can next be seen in the St Trinians sequel, released on December 18. She will also star in upcoming blockbusters Clash Of The Titans and Prince Of Persia.
