'Baarìa' opens Venice Film Festival

The Guiseppe Tornatore-directed movie is one of a number of films showing at the event, the jury for which is headed by Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee.
Speaking about the contest, the 2005 Golden Lion winner is quoted by the BBC as saying: "I do not believe we can do justice to film in competition. Each movie has its own merit.
"I have seen some films which I thought should have won but did not and sometimes I have seen films that did win that should not have."
He added: "At the same time I have witnessed competition as a most exciting thing in film culture."
Lee also described the 1954 win for Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai as a "great inspiration for Asian filmmakers" and described Venice as the "greatest film festival in the world".
