Burton: 'Brando was not for Batman role'

Rex Features

Tim Burton has dismissed suggestions that late actor Marlon Brando was lined up to portray a Batman villain.

The Alice in Wonderland director was asked by an MTV interviewer about an internet rumour that Brando was to feature as The Penguin in 1992 film Batman Returns.

According to IMDB, the list of potential candidates included the The Godfather star, Christopher Lloyd, John Candy, Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins.

"No. I also wanted Sammy Davis Jr to play Beetlejuice, so... sometimes my ideas don't go down so well with the studios. But hey, you try," Burton answered.

Danny DeVito ended up playing the part, along with Michelle Pfeiffer as iconic villain Catwoman, in the follow-up to the helmer's 1989 blockbuster.

Burton will next serve as producer on new animated film 9, which opens in UK cinemas on October 28.
