Martin Scorsese's high-budget movie The Aviator has been nominated for six Golden Globes.

The Globes, presented in January, are generally an accurate indicator as to what will happen in February's Academy Awards, meaning that Scorsese may be in line for his first ever Oscar.

Scorsese's biopic of Howard Hughes has been nominated for Best Movie (Drama), and for Best Actor and Best Actress for Leonardo Di Caprio and Cate Blanchett.

Higher in the runnings is Sideways, which is up for seven awards including Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Original Score and Best Director (Alexander Payne).

The Life and Death of Peter Sellers is up for four awards including nominations for Charlize Theron, Emily Watson and Geoffrey Rush.
