The 53rd festival runs from October 14 to 29 across a number of London venues and includes screenings, masterclasses and other special events.
As previously announced, it will open with the world premiere of the animated Wes Anderson adaptation of Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr Fox and end with the first screening of Sam Taylor-Wood's John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy.
Other films to be shown at this year's festival include Jane Campion's Bright Star, Grant Heslov's The Men Who Stare At Goats and the Coen brothers' latest comedy A Serious Man.
Moviegoers can also purchase tickets for screen talks with directors Campion and Taylor-Wood, as well as stars Clive Owen and Julianne Moore.
The annual free screening of short films from the BFI National Archive and London's Screen Archives will again take place in Trafalgar Square with the 90-minute transport-themed London Moves Me compilation showing on October 22 at 6.30pm with live musical accompaniment from Neil Brand.
In addition to the BFI Fellowship, best British newcomer, Sutherland Trophy and Grierson awards, the festival has this year introduced a best film prize to celebrate creative, original, imaginative, intelligent and distinctive filmmaking.
