The actor, who is best known for his role as Aragon in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, had previously said that he is left "shattered" after promoting each release.
The 50-year-old has now explained that he plans to focus on his painting, poetry and photography, and will retire after the release of upcoming film The Road, according to Contactmusic.
"I have no plans to do another movie," he told Men's Journal. "I don't know what's going to happen. I'm open to seeing how I feel in a while, but right now I'm not saying yes to anything."
He added: "My agent is like, 'Well, if you don't do anything, people will forget about you'. I just feel like I've taken on too much for a while."
The Road, which is adapted from Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is scheduled to open in US cinemas on October 16 and in the UK on January 8.
