The actor appeared with former Disney chairman Dick Cook at the D23 Expo earlier this month to announce the fourth instalment in the adventure franchise. However, Cook was fired from Disney last week after 29 years at the company.
"There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment... It was all born in that office," Depp told the Los Angeles Times, referring to a verbal agreement he made with Cook about the new Pirates film.
Depp hinted that he had only accepted an offer to return for a fourth movie, which currently has no script or director, because of his friendship with Cook.
"He said, 'We're thinking about doing this Pirates Of The Caribbean movie'," Depp added. "I said I was in. This was before there was a script or anything."
Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which will see Jack Sparrow search for the Fountain of Youth, is scheduled to be released in 2011.
