The X-Men filmmaker was in discussions to update the 1962 film last month.
The script by Die Hard 4.0 writer Mark Bomback centres on a young farmer who embarks on a perilous journey to the titular giant's lair to save a kidnapped princess, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The fantasy-adventure will be produced by New Line and Legendary Pictures through Neal Mortiz's Original Film banner.
The project has not been given a start date at present.
Singer recently attached himself to helm a Battlestar Galactica film for Universal. He has also been linked to a remake of 1981 movie Excalibur for Warner Brothers.
