The Canadian filmmaker's cult classic, itself based on Kurt Neumann's 1958 sci-fi offering, starred Jeff Goldblum as a scientist who is transformed into a fly after a botched experiment. Geena Davis co-starred as Goldblum's love interest Veronica.
The 20th Century Fox movie made $40 million and spawned a 1989 sequel, which was made without the involvement of Cronenberg, and an opera staged in Paris and Los Angeles.
Cronenberg's last film Eastern Promises came out in 2007 and earned Viggo Mortensen an Oscar nomination. Along with the Fly remake, the director is also working on political thriller The Maltarese Circle.
